98.5 The Sports Hub has been awarded the Marconi Award for the years best sports station. The Marconi Award is presented by the National Association of Broadcasters to the best radio stations and hosts in the country. It is named after Guglielmo Marconi, who is known as the father of long distance radio transmission.
The Sports Hub first took over air waves on August 13, 2009 cancelling long-time favorite 104.1 WBCN. Fan favorite radio talk show hosts, Toucher and Rich, left WBCN and joined The Sports Hub, filling the 6 A.M.-10 A.M. time slot. They offer little in-depth sports knowledge but are more known for their hilarious "bits" such as "Drunken Red Sox Recap" and many other hilarious sketches. They offer the perfect balance for morning radio and dominate their competition WEEI, who had sole posession of Sports Talk Radio in the Boston/New England area.
Ever since The Sports Hub hit air waves, they have gained more and more listeners for many reasons. For one, they broadcast in FM, unlike WEEI who listeners have to deal with static noises and radio signals cutting in and out. While WEEI is "the home of the Red Sox and Celtics," 98.5 The Sports Hub is "the home for the Patriots and Bruins." The timing of 98.5 couldn't have been any better. For years Bruins fans weren't given any attention on WEEI and 98.5 capitalized on this. Not only did they give in-depth Bruins coverage, but they aired Bruins games and fans were able to call in and talk hockey. Next thing you know, the Bruins were on their way to the Stanley Cup Finals, winning their first title in over 30 years. 98.5 was able to assist fans in tracking their incredible season.
For years I was forced to listen to WEEI as it was Boston's only Sports Talk radio station. I never like to jump ship with anything I follow and tried as long as I could to stay loyal to WEEI. I still do catch myself listening to WEEI sometimes, mostly when 98.5 has gone to commercial. However, 98.5 is simply much better radio. Whether you enjoy the hilarious radio that is Toucher and Rich in the morning, Andy Gresh and Scott Zolak's in-depth football analysis, Mike Felger and Tony Massarotti's grouchy, yet insightful, sports talk, or Damon Amendolara's mothership of sports radio at night, 98.5 The Sports Hub crushes their competition WEEI.
WEEI made some crucial mistakes along the way to allow 98.5 to take over the majority of listeners. Just last week they switched over to FM radio, broadcasting on 93.7 FM. However, this was much too late and most listeners are sick of Glen Ordway and his "Big Show." Earlier this year WEEI switched up their lineup of hosts as they could see the ratings falling fast. They tried teaming up Michael Holley and Glen Ordway and broke up "The Dale and Holley Show" which was decent morning sports talk. Now WEEI has Mutt and Merloni which is like having rump roast compared to 98.5's filet mignon. WEEI made some crucial mistakes along the way to allow 98.5 to take over the market and look what has happened. 98.5 The Sports Hub has been awarded Sports Radio's most prestigious award. With the Patriots season just starting and the Red Sox fading fast, 98.5 The Sports Hub looks to put a strangle hold on the listeners of New England for the foreseeable future. Congratulations 98.5 on a job well done!
